South Sea cultured pearls are larger than traditional Akoya cultured pearls, most more than 10mm. They are produced by much larger oysters in the warm waters of the South Seas, in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Due to their spectacular size and difficulty to cultivate, it may take a dozen harvest years to collect enough pearls that match in size, shape and color to create one necklace.
